Abstract

The classical theory of deflection of beams neglects the square of the first derivative in the bending moment equation, and cannot be used when the slopes of the beames are large. This paper deals with large deflection, by slanting and concentrated forces, of initially circular and uniform beam. Both the strict and approximate solutions of this problem are derived, and the scope of application of the latter is sought. In addition, the approximate solution for large deflection of circular-arc and trapezoidal cantilever beam is given by the use of series, and it is applied to the calculation of the deflection of a laminated spring with a shackle, and the considerable agreement with experimental value is confirmed.
