Abstract

Among the options for reducing lighting energy consumption is the effective utilization of natural lighting. This article analyses innovative methods for maximum utilization of natural light from quantitative and qualitative viewpoints. A technique of daylighting using direct beam radiation from the sun has been examined in some detail. Beam sunlighting is capable of being directed 15 to 20 metres inwards from a side lit exterior facade by a reflector or refractor system. New buildings specifically designed with this application in mind could realize substantial energy savings in electrical consumption.
