Abstract

John Clarke worked at Claybury Hospital for five years (1960-65) before taking an appointment as mental welfare officer in the London Borough of Hammersmith. After taking the C.S.W. in 1969 he was later appointed Senior Social Worker in Ham mersmith Social Service Department and, in June 1970, was appointed Deputy Princi pal Mental Welfare Officer (training officer, social work supervisor) in the London Borough of Kingston upon Thames, Health and Welfare Department. Won joint first prize in the Mental Health Research Fund Social Workers' Essay Competition, 1969, with the present article.
