Abstract

1. 1. The evoked response in the cingulate gyrus which follows stimulation of the cingulum fasciculus has two components. The first is a conducted spike in the cingulum fasciculus. The second is a cingulate cortex trans-cortical potential. 2. 2. The initial spike is shown to have axonal properties with maximal conduction velocity of about 20 m/sec and appropriate responsiveness to dual and repetitive stimulation, anesthesia and anoxia. It is localized in the cingulum fasciculus and responds to stimulation all along the length of the fasciculus. 3. 3. The cingulate trans-cortical potential is present throughout most of the length of the gyrus. 4. 4. The active cortex in a transverse plane has the form of a “C”. This configuration as a generator is analyzed as the determinant of the asymmetrical field of the cingulate trans-cortical response.
