Abstract
This study examines a sample from the Hamburg Emigration Lists in the years 1855–1857, 1875–1877, and 1880 to determine whether changing conditions that would affect expected net benefits of migrants wrought changes in the quantifiable characteristics of emigrating Farmers and Laborers. The analysis follows a human capital model of migration. The data present evidence of a decrease in the expected benefits among Farmers but weaker evidence for a decrease for Laborers.
