Abstract

Edwin Arlington Robinson was a great American poet of the 20th century. He is well known for his vivid character portraits which truthfully reflect the inner life of the people at the turn of twentieth century. Like the poet himself, characters of his poems are deeply indulged in the romantic and idealistic pastime, which are disoriented and confused in the modern time. This paper analyses the rhetorical device of anti-climax used in Robinson’s poems, tries to prove that poet gets a sense of humor and irony towards the real world.
