Abstract

A continuum theory of 3D fracture with a cohesive zone model is presented. The analysis uses the theory of configurational forces and is valid for any crack propagation regime. The theory provides insight into the modeling of crack growth accompanied by progressive damage accumulation and other types of local microstructural changes. Furthermore, it offers justification for the introduction of less traditional cohesive zone models which, in addition to the opening displacement, include other types of crack surface deformation parameters.
