Abstract
This paper contains the second phase of theoretical studies on the hysteretic behaviour of an elastic-plastic bar subjected to large deformation under variable repeated axial loading. Basic equations obtained in the first phase of the studies are summarized and approximated by assuming that changes in bar dimensions can be neglected and that the square of the slope of the deflection curve is negligibly small in comparison with unity, to yield the basic equations obtained previously for small deformation. By making use of the basic equations a numerical example is presented for the load-deformation characteristics of the bar from the large and small deformation theories for comparison purposes. The paper concludes with a discussion on the effects of large deformation, based on the order of magnitude and the results of the example.
