Abstract

In the absence of public transport, smart mobility services like E-hail are used these days to meet urban travel demand. E-hail is a cost-effective substitute for conventional taxis and other local private transport modes. Hence, they are becoming an imperative component of the transportation systems in many local urban settlements, such as Hyderabad, Pakistan. In Hyderabad, commuters either rely on their own vehicle or on E-hail to travel. Thus, to unfold its criticality in urban areas; this study is aimed to identify the demographics and trip purposes of E-hail end-users. Using frequency distribution on a random sample of 180 frequent E-hail users, the study found 16-30 aged singles having income between 4K-50K PKR as the most dominating end-users’ group, who used E-hail for home-based trips. Moreover, unaffordability, theft, fraud, uneasiness, and road law breach were found as the most common problems. For which, affordable fare, more E-hail vehicles and professional development of drivers, were suggested as essential improvements to be made. The study is significant as, on one hand, it had built a strong knowledge base for policymakers and transport planners to regularize E-hail services. On the other hand, it would help E-hail companies to improve the quality of E-hail operations.
