Abstract
Poverty elimination in India has remained a great challenge. Since independence, several policies have been adopted in this direction. Yet, no such visible improvement is witnessed in the standard of living of the people at the bottom of the income pyramid. The argument is not that all the government policies have failed to address the problem. But, there is certainly need of an alternate approach to supplement the government programs for poverty reduction. The present piece tries to see an alternative analytical approach in the form of marginal voluntary sacrifices by people themselves without government policy interventions. It finds that a smaller sacrifice from the people at the top of income pyramid can help in achieving progressivity in income distribution and poverty reduction.
