Abstract

Frequency encoding and decoding are found to be a very useful and potential technique in all-optical computing and data processing. Frequency of light wave generally remains unaltered after reflection, refraction or absorption. So the bit error problem can be avoided using frequency-encoding principle. Several frequency-encoded all-optical switches are proposed by many authors. In the present paper, we first time propose a new concept of implementing all-optical minority logic operations using semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-based switches. In minority logic, the minority input is selected among the odd number of inputs (here the no. of inputs is 3) at the output. Frequency-encoded all-optical AND and OR gates along with SOA-based switches are used to obtain the desired logic system.
