Abstract

We outline a method for computing total cross sections for one- and two-photon ionization from a stationary principle. The method is based on a generalization of the complex Kohn variational method, recently developed for studying electron-neutral atom/molecule collisions. It also has features common to complex basis function techniques. The method is illustrated by application to atomic hydrogen in its ground and various excited states.
