Abstract

An airborne radiation thermometer for use in measuring sea surface temperatures from aircraft is described. Infra-red radiation from the water surface is compared to the radiation from a black body at known temperature within the instrument. The sensitivity is about 0·01°C. Errors attending such measurements are discussed, and several applications to oceanographic research are cited.
