Abstract

In current household environment, we are exposed to some risks such as air pollution, noise, and property loss. Specially, indoor air pollution can cause disease and death to humans, and indoor noise generated on upper floors can cause stress and neighbors trouble. These problems increase the disease of individuals and further increase socioeconomic losses in the country. So, strict regulation or technical supports by government are required to overcome these social problems. This chapter deals with an indoor air quality and event detection system to monitor the household environment. The proposed system uses multiple sensors and microphones to measure indoor air quality and indoor noise. Then it simultaneously maintains the measured data in internal memory and on Internet server. So, it can act as an indoor life logger or indoor black box. In addition, the combination of multiple sensors and camera can detect fire and intruders. In this chapter, we present a hardware design and software architecture for a new system that incorporates digital hardware, analog circuits, and a network. The proposed system is connected to other systems on a wireless network to share the measured data. We also describe the network architecture and communication protocols.
