Abstract

This study discusses the experience of an Alcoholics Anony mous group formed to provide aftercare for the alcoholic offender released from penal institutions in Ontario, Canada. The forty men in the study were followed up for at least four years after their release from prison. For the purposes of this article, they are divided into five categories according to fundamental change in behavior, abstinence, and social rehabilitation. The article deals briefly with the spiritual conversion common to those men who showed a fundamental change in character. The alcoholic offender's great need for community acceptance is discussed and the invaluable role that nonprofessional members of a community can take in helping him adjust is emphasized.
