Abstract

This paper describes the Manning Cultural Awareness Program, a culturally relevant violence prevention and social rehabilitation model for incarcerated African-American male adolescents and adults. Unlike traditional violence prevention approaches, this program focuses on incarcerated males. More importantly, this program addresses the gender-specific social and psychological needs of African-American males. Coupled with literacy, vocational, and higher education programs and opportunities, this model has the best chance of reducing the intra-ethnic and intra-gender violence that currently permeates many African-American communities across the United States.
