Abstract

In order to enhance the energy storage efficiency of the off-peak electricity provided by the grid, an advanced concept for the integration of the coal power unit and the compressed air energy storage (CAES) system has been put forward. According to the principle of energy cascade utilization, the heat energy released from the charging process of the CAES system is utilized to heat the feedwater/ condensate of the coal power unit, whereas the coal power unit delivers its energy to the air at the discharging process. A supercritical coal power unit with 350 MW power output has been selected for case study. Furthermore, the thermodynamic evaluation was implemented to assess the availability of the novel incorporation.
