Abstract

Splitting or shortening bus routes result in low quality of service and operation efficiency. An adjustment method based on the bus passenger origin and destination (OD) matrix analysis is proposed for those routes. In the proposed method, the OD matrix is generated based on smart card data. To determine the adjusted mode and the adjusted stop, indices such as OD passenger volumes, the number of OD pairs, passenger volume on each segment, passenger boardings and alightings, and the total boardings/alightings among specific adjacent stops, are analyzed based on the OD matrix. By means of comparing the distribution of passenger flows of the adjusted route with that of the original route, the proposed method is proved to be effective.
