Abstract

In this paper a power factor correction (PFC) based Zeta converter fed voltage source inverter (VSI) based permanent magnet brushless DC motor (PMBLDCM) drive is employed for an air conditioner and controlled for its variable speed operation towards energy efficiency improvement. A single-phase single-switch AC-DC converter topology based on the Zeta converter is employed for power factor correction (PFC) which ensures near unity power factor in wide speed range of the drive. The proposed control scheme with PFC converter based PMBLDCM drive is designed, modelled and simulated in Matlab-Simulink environment for an air conditioner compressor driven through a 1 kW, 1,500 rpm PMBLDC motor. The obtained results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed speed control scheme with PFC features in wide range of the speed and an AC input voltage.
