Abstract

The maximin algorithm is a blind adaptive array algorithm that provides simultaneous interference suppression and beamforming in a frequency-hopping communication system. The performance of a maximin array for mobile cellular frequency-hopping CDMA networks is examined. Both independent and completely correlated Rayleigh fading at the antennas are simulated. It is found that the maximin array relies on adaptive cophasing and beamforming to enhance the desired signal and thereby suppress the multiple-access interference. Although the maximin array does not perform as well as an ideal equal-gain-combining diversity array against multiple-access interference, its performance is good enough that its ability to null stationary interference makes it desirable in many mobile communication networks.
