Abstract

In this paper, a novel 3-Dimensional adaptive hierarchical Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) scheme for elastic optical networks has been introduced. The scheme can adjust the spacing between constellation points and control bit-mapping to provide different degrees of protection according to channel conditions or Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. The simulation results indicate that the multi-dimensional hierarchical constellation effectively improves the receiver sensitivity and reduces the bit error rate of the system. The 3D-AH-8/64QAM modulation scheme can obtain a maximum of 3.3 dB and 5.7 dB SNR gains respectively compared with 2D-8QAM and 2D-64QAM. The proposed scheme has a huge potential in the future high-speed elastic optical network.
