Abstract

An action research project was undertaken involving patients undergoing bunion surgery. A baseline audit was carried out using a purpose-designed questionnaire with a prepaid reply envelope and local standards were set. Sixty-one patients were sent a questionnaire before introduction of a condition-specific information leaflet and a further 61 patients after introduction. The leaflet was assessed for readability using two methods: Flesch Reading Ease Score and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level.Ethical issues and limitations of the study were considered. Previous evaluative studies have failed to consider all aspects of written patient information; i.e. design, readability, timing of dissemination and ascertaining what information patients actually want. Implications for practice are discussed and recommendations made for further research. Training needs of personnel involved in the production of written patients information leaflets are identified.
