Abstract

t THE German author and scientist J. George A. Forster (I754-I794) achieved early fame for accompanying his father, J. Reinhold L Forster (I729-I798), the official naturalist of Captain Cook's second voyage (I772-I775), and subsequently for publishing the Observations made during a Voyage round the World (London, I777). Upon their return, shortly before the outbreak of the American Revolution, the Forsters became engaged in a bitter quarrel with the Admiralty, particularly its First Lord, the Earl of Sandwich (I7i8-I792). It can be assumed, therefore, that they looked with little favor on any and all actions undertaken by the Tory government. Having originally come to England in I766, the Forsters had made Franklin's personal acquaintance through mutual friends and through Reinhold's affiliation with the Royal Society of London. In the fall of I777, George went to Paris on business for his father. A fragment of his journal describing this trip has been preserved. Although it appeared in print forty years ago,' it seems to be unknown in this country. Of particular interest is Forster's description of Franklin during the most trying period of the American Commissioner's life in France:
