Abstract

The theory of an accelerator with non-linear spiral focusing is developed and the basic formulae are derived for the example of cubic focusing. An approximate calculation is given for the size of the stability region, the adiabatic damping, the mechanism for transverse phase stability and for the effect of perturbations. As far as its quantitative characteristics are concerned, this accelerator is very similar to a conventional hard-focusing machine.
