Abstract

Primary and secondary site hydrogen atom abstraction from propane by the CN radical is investigated using ab initio molecular orbital theory. The computed trends are compared with experiment and found to be in qualitative agreement. The mechanistic preferences are rationalized in terms of the geometries and redistribution of charge in the transition structures relative to reactants and products.
