Abstract

This paper provides an 8-node multilayer composite finite element based on a three dimensional composite finite element and the multilayer composite finite element method developed earlier for interlaminar stress analysis of composite laminates. The element has a partial stress field of three transverse stresses which are required to be continuous in a laminated structure. The three transverse stresses are taken as basic variables and a partial stress field is assumed. A surface stress parameter vector is introduced to insure that the interface traction continuity condition and upper/lower surface traction free condition are satisfied exactly. A numerical example is given, which shows advantages of this 8-node multilayer composite finite element.
