Abstract

This paper presents the design and implementation of a K band, linear synthetic aperture radar (SAR) prototype imaging system suitable for short-range security screening applications. Linear SAR data is acquired over a length of 30 cm using a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar with 8 GHz bandwidth. A calibration algorithm is implemented to correct for signal distortions introduced in the RF front end followed by SAR signal processing using the range migration algorithm (RMA). System performance is compared with and without the calibration algorithm to show improvement in the image generated with calibration. The calibrated SAR imaging system achieves a range resolution of 2.5 cm and a cross range resolution of 4.5 cm at a measurement distance of 2 m.
