Abstract

"Amuse-œil" surveys various techniques for reading films in an alternative way, what Roland Barthes calls “an interrogative reading” in his article “The Third Meaning.” The video essay then applies this technique to Jacques Tati’s Playtime (1967, France) to reveal several visual threads that are difficult or even impossible to see under normal viewing circumstances.
