Abstract

SUMMARY. — The wave theory of light, built on an analogy with sound vibration, had, until the 19th century, maintained the hypothesis of a longitudinal vibration of light. The author shows that, thanks to Ampere's influence, Fresnel was able in 1821 to discard this notion and to adopt the hypothesis of transverse vibration, thus opening up new possibilities for wave theory.
