Abstract
Objective To explore feature of the spontaneous neural activity under the resting state in postpartum depression. Methods Twenty-six patients with postpartum depression (PPD group) and twenty-six matched healthy puerpera volunteers (control group) were examined using resting state functional MRI. The independent sample t-test was employed to compare the difference of amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) between the two groups, and the correlation analysis was conducted between ALFF of brain regions with significant difference and the Edinburgh postnatal depression scale (EPDS) score. Results Compared with control group, PPD group presented with ALFF values significantly decreased in the bilateral dorsal medial prefrontal cortex and the insular, while significantly increased in the inferior temporal gyrus and the left cerebellum (single voxel P 26, Alphasim corrected). The ALFF value in the right dorsal medial prefrontal lobe negatively correlated to their EPDS scores (r=-0.45, P=0.035). Conclusion Abnormal spontaneous activity of certain brain regions is popular in PPD patients, and their clinical depressive symptoms may negatively correlate to the ALFF in the right dorsal medial prefrontal cortex, the region for self-cognition and emotion regulation.
