Abstract

ABSTRACT A mechanism, explaining amplification of scintillations in mixed alurninates activated by cerium ions — (Y1Lu)A1O3:Ce (0 x 1) is proposed. Quasichern.ical reactions of ions Ce3 and Ce4 with holes and electrons causing scintillations areconsidered. Is shown, that the intensity of scintillations increases with decrease of mean free paths of electrons and holesand that it is proportional to the parameter of the compositional disorder x (1-x). Also the mechanism of amplification ofscintillations caused by transfer of excitation energy by excitons is considered. Keywords: Mixed crystals. Amplification of scintillations, Mean free paths, (Y1.Lu)A1O3:Ce.Recently interest to new scintillation materials has sharply increased because of appeared importantpractical applications ' . In a number of laboratories the new monocrystals are synthesized which surpass inmany properties of traditional phosphoruses. The special interest is caused by some solid solutions whichas far as we know reveal the greater light yield than pure initial crystals Below we propose a possiblemechanism. which results in increased light yield in the case of mixed crystals. Actually it is caused by themore effective interaction of electrons and holes in solid solutions. For definiteness we shall considerCe-doped yttrium-lutetium aluminates 2
