Abstract

Zinc 31-hydroxychlorin bearing a polyethylene glycol (PEG) chain provided supramolecular gel in methanol/water mixed solvents. The amphiphilic chlorophyllous pigment preferentially formed an antiparallel dimer in which two PEG chains are located both ends of the hydrophobic core of stacked tetrapyrroles. Higher order assembly of the bolaamphiphilic chlorophyllous dimer provided a fibrous nanostructure that constructed a three-dimensional network to yield supramolecular gel in the mixed solvents. The PEG- and hydroxy-modified chlorophyll derivative acted as a building block for fabricating nanofiber and functioned as an effective π-conjugated gelator.
