Abstract

Amphilina bipunctata n. sp. Specific diagnosis: Large representatives of the genus, reaching a length of greater than 50 mm. Broadly rounded posteriorly; conically pointed anteriorly. Apical organ small; lumen about 0.5 mm deep. 350-400 testes on each side between vitellaria and uterine coils, slightly overlapping the latter posteriad; not reaching posteriorly to ovary, nor anteriorly to end of vitellaria. Vasa efferentia anastomose in mid-line anteriad of ovary, thus producing a net prior to forming the vas deferens. Vas deferens much coiled, arising anteriad of ovary. Bulbus propulsorius pyriform, 0.97-1.05 mm long; maximum diameter through muscular portion 0.390.46 mm; maximum diameter including glandular layer 0.63-0.75 mm; distal portion crosses vagina dorsally. Ejaculatory duct dorsal and slightly lateral to vagina. Male pore terminal, in center of a papilla. Vitellaria lateral, consisting of tubular strands; divided into two portions on each side, a small anterior mass separated from the main mass. Ovary small, compact, with several finger-like lobes; in posterior 1/llth of body. Mehlis' gland well developed, attenuated posteriorly, 2-4 times as long as wide. Uterus arises dorsally from Mehlis' gland; primary ascending loop on opposite side of ovary from vas deferens, internal to testicular field except posteriorly. Descending loop on same side, slanting to other side of ovary posteriad of testicular field, second ascending loop with massive transverse coils between the descending loop and testicular field; uterine pore terminal, adjacent to and ventrad of acetabulum. Seminal receptacle pyriform, 0.51-0.79 mm long by 0.36-0.45 mm maximum diameter. Anterior half of vagina spirals to seminal receptacle; posterior half straight. Vaginal pore in general body surface 0.04-0.07 mm lateral to male papilla. A lateral nerve trunk between vitellaria and testes on either side. Uterine ova oval, 0.112-0.150 mm long by 0.059-0.075 mm maximum diameter; shell 0.003 mm thick. Type host: Sturgeon. Location: Coelom. Type locality: Dodson, Oregon. Type date: August, 1923. Holotype: U.S.N.M. Helm. Coll. No. 46362.
