Abstract

Ampelisca remora is described from Ria de Arosa and Ria de Muros (Galicia, Spain). Twenty-six specimens have been collected from a muddy sand Prionospio malmgreni community and one specimen from a muddy Amphiura chiajei-Amphiura filiformis community. The new species is characterized by (1) a dorsal sucker-like structure, unknown in the Amphipoda, on the first segment of the pleosome; (2) its short antennae: the first antenna reaches beyond the peduncle of the second; the second is slightly longer than 1/3 of the body; (3) the presence of a small tooth at the posterior corner of the second epimeral plate; (4) the 7th pereopod, with a short lobeless merus and a globular dactylus. The species is compared to those of congeners with which it appears to be most similar.
