Abstract

The aim of this work is to review chemical engineer Amparo Barba Cisneros's (1918–2011) academic career. She studied at the Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Químicas (encq, the National School of Chemical Sciences) — which is now the Faculty of Chemistry at unam. Later, she worked at Syntex Research Laboratories as head of the Micro-analytic Department between 1947 and 1955. Amparo Barba was part of the first generations of encq's students and she was also one of the first women with degree in Chemical Engineering from the school. Thus, her professional activities constitute an alternative of the Mexican woman's intellectual development and gender equity starting in Mexico. This study was conducted using documents from the Archivo Histórico de la unam (unam Historical Archive), as well as interviews with Amparo Barba as reference.
