Abstract

The effectiveness of amoxicillin in the treatment of males with uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis was compared with treatment with doxycycline. One hundred five males were randomly assigned to the amoxicillin group or the doxycycline group before cultures had been confirmed. Amoxicillin was administered in a single 3.0-g dose, and 900 mg of doxycycline was given in several doses over a period of four days. Cure rate for each drug was 94%. There were two failures with each drug. There was no evidence of allergy or toxicity to either drug, but a single oral 3.0-g dose of amoxicillin caused less gastrointestinal distress. Amoxicillin is effective in the treatment of uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis in males.
