Abstract

Amos Akerman, a small-town Georgia lawyer and former Confederate soldier, was appointed in 1870 by President Ulysses S. Grant as the first US Attorney General to lead the new Department of Justice. He marshaled federal forces to drive the Ku Klux Klan into virtual extinction for over 40 years.
