Abstract

Amorphous NiZr alloys are prepared by the mechanical alloying of the crystalline alloys in a planetary ball mill. The glass-forming range, using this technique, is estimated from an enthalpy diagram to be between 40 and 50 at.% Zr. Outside this range a two-phase alloy, with an amorphous phase and a crystalline f.c.c. phase, is formed. For the amorphous alloys, the positions of the peak maxima in the X-ray diffraction patterns, the crystallization temperatures and the activation energies of crystallization are compared with those of the corresponding amorphous alloys prepared by other methods.
