Abstract

Amorphous forming ability (AFA) and mechanical properties of Al 100− x− y Zr x LTM y (LTM=Fe, Co, Ni and Cu, x=0–7, y=0–16) amorphous alloys with high aluminum concentration have been studied. A single amorphous phase is formed under composition of 11 at.%≦(Zr+Fe(Co))≦15 at.% and 13 at.%≦(Zr+Ni)≦17 at.% with 1 at.%≦Zr≦7 at.% alloys. When the LTM elements in these alloys are replaced by Cu, no single amorphous phase is formed. The factors, including atomic radius, element content, enthalpy of mixing and maximum extended solid solubility, which affect the amorphous forming ability of alloys are examined. Hardness and tensile strength of ductile α-Al plus amorphous phase alloys and single amorphous phase alloys are also tested. Most of the present amorphous alloys show high tensile strength over 1000 MPa.
