Abstract

Three stages in the development of metals for transformer cores are considered: hot-rolled sheet, cold-rolled textured steel, and amorphous steel. These transitions occur when the physical limit on improvements in the energy losses in magnetic reversal has been reached. In the current stage, amorphous steel is being adopted for the cores of powerful transformers. The production of amorphous steel and transformers in a single integrated process is proposed. Economic analysis is presented.
