Abstract
Amorphous calcium metaphosphate can be produced commercially in sufficient quantity to be helpful in the present acute shortage of phosphorus supplements for poultry feeding. There appears to be no information in the literature regarding the ability of animals to utilize the phosphorus of this compound. Crystalline calcium metaphosphate is insoluble in acid; however, the finely ground amorphous calcium metaphosphate dissolves quite readily, even in dilute acids. It must be emphasized that the amorphous material was used in this investigation and the results do not necessarily apply to the crystalline compound. The sample used was manufactured by the Tennessee Valley Authority and obtained from Mr. K. D. Jacob, Bureau of Plant Industry, Agricultural Research Center, Beltsville, Maryland. It contained 27.9 percent phosphorus as compared with the theoretical value of 31.3 percent phosphorus in the pure compound. Ninety-six percent of the total phosphorus present was soluble in neutral ammonium citrate solution when .
