Abstract

We comment on the stress-induced amorphization triggered by elastic instability of crystals upon shock loading at extremely high rates. We also discuss the amorphization of immiscible systems, through an evaluation of the positive heat of mixing that external driving forces must overcome to mechanically alloy the immiscible elements into amorphous solutions. These cases serve as examples illustrating the challenges in understanding mechanically driven amorphization.
