Abstract

This chapter provides the discussion of the Anthropocene through an interpretation of Hannah Arendt’s notion of the human condition, her diagnosis of modernity as a “society of job-holders” and her related thoughts on “the crisis of education.” It discusses Arendt’s contribution in light of the aforementioned issues in the field of sustainable education and the anthropocenic challenges. The chapter also discusses how people are to interpret and understand this conception, but also possibilities for political action and creation of a new world in the age of the Anthropocene. It focuses on central issues in the fields of eco-philosophy and education: the relationship between human beings and nature – as well as the diagnoses of our present society that follow from these presumptions. The chapter provides a background for discussing the contribution of Arendt’s philosophy in the age of the Anthropocene and the challenges of this age.
