Abstract

The aim of the article is to question the possibility of describing a judicial institution based on the way it organizes and awards medals, orders and honors created by the institution itself. The focus of our interest is to find out how the awarding process worked. We will discuss the rules behind the “Order of Judicial Merit” for Labor in Rio de Janeiro, the way the nominations were made, and, especially, who was honored. We examine the distribution of honors according to both their own hierarchy (there are four of them), and the relationship between them and other social markers such as gender, region, profession and belonging to the legal world.
