Abstract

Two abnormal structures may create similar linear intraamniotic echoes. These are amniotic bands, frequently associated with fetal injury, and amniotic sheets, not reported to be associated with anomalies.1 At ultrasonography, the two can be differentiated by noting the number of free edges present. Amniotic sheets are broad reflective surfaces with one edge attached to the uterine wall and one free edge where the fold occurs. Amniotic bands usually have two free edges. Although it has been speculated that amniotic sheets are folds of amnion and chorion over a uterine synechia, 2 only one case has reported histopathologic correlation.3 This paper presents support for the hypothesis that an amniotic sheet is a wrinke or fold in the amnion and chorion that can be caused by an irregularity of the placental surface.
