Abstract
Objective To evaluate the efficacy of fresh amniotic membrane transplantation compared with limbal autograft transplantation on pterygium treatment. Methods Forty eight eyes of 42 patients with pterygium were divided into two groups, each having 24. They were treated by fresh amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) and limbal autograft transplantation (LAT) respectively. Recurrent rate was observed during the 12 to 19 follow- up time. Results Six (26%) of 23 eyes, three ( 13.6% ) of 22 eyes showed recurrence after AMT and LAT, respectively. Three of 15 eyes (20%) and two ( 14% ) of 14 eyes showed recurrence after AMT and LAT for primary pterygium, respectively. And Three (37%) of 8 eyes and one (12.5%) of 8 eyes showed recurrence for recurrent pterygium in each group respectively, Conelusions The efficacy of AMT for primary pterygium recurrence is equivalent to that of LAT. LAT may be preferred over AMT for recurrent pterygium. Key words: Amniotic membrane transplantation; Limbal autograft transplantation; Pterygium; Treatment
