Abstract

A total of 189 samples of amniotic fluid obtained at different stages of gestation were analyzed for progestins and immunoreactive estrogens. Progestin levels were 61.98±33.49 (S.D.) ng. per milliter at 11 to 15 weeks and decreased to 29.59 ± 11.54 ng. per milliliter after 30 weeks. Estrogen values were 1.59 ± 0.87 and 2.39 ± 0.77 ng. per milliliter at the corresponding stages. After 36 weeks, estrogen levels were 4.06 ± 1.57 ng. per milliliter while progestins were the same as at 30 weeks. The physiologic significance of these findings remains to be determined.
