Abstract

1. 1. The concentrations of ammonia and urea and the distribution of urease activity in the gastrointestinal tract of rabbits ( Oryctolagus and Sylvilagus) are presented along with a discussion of their physiological significance. 2. 2. Urea concentrations in rabbit small intestines rise above those found in plasma. This relationship is also examined in a number of rodents ( Microtus, Peromyscus, Mus and Rattus). Large quantities of urea must enter the cecum from the small intestine. 3. 3. Urease in the cecal mucosa probably accounts for the entry of some blood borne urea-N into the cecum as ammonia-N. The accumulation of ammonia and urea in the rinsed cecum is examined in relation to water resorption.
