Abstract

Isatinyl-N-oxide ( 2) reacts with primary aliphatic amines at 2-position yielding radicals 5 whereas the parent compound N-hydroxyisatin is attacked at 3-position by N-nucleophiles. Alternative structures to 5 were excluded by comparison of ESR coupling constants with those of several model compounds.
