Abstract

A study has been made of malonic acid analogs of naturally occurring α-amino acids to determine if stereospecific monodecarboxylation will lead to the formation of optically pure α-amino acids or if these acids possess peculiar biological properties of their own. The synthesis of the malonic acid analogs of leucine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan, via alkylation of carbobenzyloxyaminomalonic ester, is described.
